Madrid Archeology Museum

We were able to visit the Madrid Archaeology Museum and view many of the exhibits there. I especially like seeing the Iberian history and the artifacts there that date back to the 6th century B.C. These artifacts are examples of the cultures and civilizations that existed way before Madrid was the capital of Spain and even before the idea of Spain even existed. The Iberians were the first to settle the Iberian Peninsula which Spain and Portugal sit on. We learned that it later hosted civilizations from the Romans and the Moors as well. We saw pottery, jewelry, sculptures and tools from this time period. 

 

The preservation and presentation of the artifacts shows that Spain takes great pride in its diverse and deep history. We saw jewelry: necklaces, bracelets, earrings, made of gold, silver and bronze. This helped me to picture what the people would look like adorned in these intricate pieces of jewelry. We also saw many weapons they would have used at this time. There were spears, swords and shields. This helped us to know that Iberian people probably saw their fair share of battles. Sculptures and pottery seem to be very important at this time as well. We saw many sculptures of people, but also many jars and vases.

 

The Archaeology Museum of Madrid draws students and scholars from around the world to study the pieces there. This contributes greatly to Madrid being a cultural capital of the world. Seeing all the ancient pieces help people to learn about history, what was important to a culture, how they lived their lives, what tools they used and how they survived. People come there to study ancient history and how that history helped to create the Spain that exists today. I really enjoyed our visit to the Madrid Archaeology Museum!
